Alive and Kicking!

We're back up and running on the aul' internet!

Since we got the band back on track in September '14 after a 18 month break we've enjoyed a great time travelling around playing to old friends and meeting new ones.

During the time away from Glasnevin, Conor enjoyed a few months in Spain with Alan and Pat of Shebeen, Kieran toured around Ireland, Scotland and England with the two Tony's in the Spirit of Freedom, and Chris. . .  well, Chris just about graced every band in Glasgow!

But, now we're back together playing, we've experimented with new sounds, new instruments, new arrangements and we're putting a plan together for the future for a new album with some original material. Always trying to keep the sound fresh and relevant.

So we're back playing in the usual haunts and diving into every nook and cranny both sides of the Irish Sea for sessions with Italy this year being added to the list of countries we've played and plans afoot for a mini tour Down Under as well!

So, hopefully we'll see you all somewhere down the line.

With the 5th anniversary of the first gig coming in March, here's to the next 5 years! Fanacht Beo!

'We Only Want the Earth' Review by TAL Fanzine.

We Only Want The Earth - Glasnevin

'We Only Want the Earth' is the debut album from Glasgow Irish rebel band Glasnevin. Glasnevin were formed in December 2009 and this album has been long awaited by their ever growing fan base in Scotland, Ireland and further afield. The band consists of Conor and Kieran, they are also joined on an occasional basis (and on this CD) by Wakes bassist Chris. They are one of the hardest working on the scene and regularly play to audiences in Glasgow and Ireland, they have also played in Hamburg and completed a very successful tour of New York.

The lads have a special affection for the city and people of Derry. They play there on a monthly basis and have built up a large number of fans and friends in the area. In fact many of the songs on the album are related to the republican struggle in the city. They have recorded excellent versions of Pangur Ban's 'Willie and Danny' and 'George on Pop' on the album. Pangur Ban, although long since disbanded, have been a huge influence on Glasnevin. They have also resurrected their songs 'The Smuggler' and 'The Informer' and introduced them to a new generation. Christy Moore's powerful ballad about Bloody Sunday, 'Minds Locked Shut', is one of the best written about that significant day in Derry's history and isn't in the usual repertoire of Irish rebel bands; it is a worthy addition to the track list.

Recently Kieran, the bands song writer, has been writing and working on new original rebel songs. If his first effort is anything to go by, 'Kevin Lynch Is My Name', Kieran has a great talent and I look forward to hearing more. The song has already featured on the 30th Anniversary Hunger Strike album that was released by Cairde na hÉireann last year. It has become an instant classic and only a short while after it was recorded it was played by an Irish band at a commemoration rally for Kevin and was well received by his family, friends and comrades. Another hunger striker from Co. Derry, Francis Hughes, is remembered on the album as the band play a rousing version of the Irish Brigade's 'Hughes Lives On'.

Other songs on the album include 'Grace', 'The Rising of The Moon' and 'Boys of the Old Brigade'. Although well covered and known songs the band have achieved what others have failed to do and made these songs sound fresh and original. If I had to pick a favourite from the CD, it would be Carroll Bawn. An old song about the 1798 rebellion that I first heard through the singing of Terry 'Cruncher' O'Neill. This ballad deserves to be wider known than it is and Conor sings it perfectly on this album.

What makes Glasnevin one of the most exciting bands on the circuit is that there is so much more to come. Every time I see them play in the Gallowgate after a match or watch them on You Tube they sound better each time. This is a fantastic debut album and I would urge all our readers to buy a copy as you will not be disappointed!
